The Power of Listening as a Beginner Language Learner
My name is Kris and I've been running the Actual Fluency Podcast and Blog since 2014, where I've interviewed over 150 accomplished multilinguals (polyglots) and industry professionals.
Today I'd like to talk to you about listening...
Listening is a highly underrated activity in language learning that anyone really ought to be doing more of.
But, how do you find suitable content to listen to as a beginner when all the native-level materials are way too difficult, and all the typical beginner resources are in English?
Or worse yet, they teach you language you're never going to use!
Like booking a hotel room over the phone, or 30 different species of animals...
This is where Bite Size Languages come in...
It's a new series of courses providing beginners or false beginners with effortless listening practice, that you can actually understand and follow along to.
With 100 lessons of short-and-easy dialogues, they are also easy to do, even if you're super busy or don't feel like it.
When you've listened to the dialogues a number of times, then you can dive into the lesson notes and do more conventional studying with transcripts, translations, vocabulary, and grammar sections.
Here's what you'll get from working on listening to comprehensible input as a beginner:
More Sample Lessons
Each lesson is professionally recorded by a male and female speaker.
У тебя красивый дом!
¡No puedo dormir!
Caffè con latte e zucchero?
Was kostet das Benzin?
The course is primarily hosted on Teachable, which offers the most in-depth study opportunity. We also use an app called Soundwise to deliver a hands-free, immersive experience with just the audios.
The course features Mexican Spanish speakers, so that's the pronunciation you'll be hearing. The vocabulary and grammar is very universal and free from any local variations.
The BSL French course is based on France French. You will have no problem using this French in Quebec either, and you'd be able to understand 95%+ of what the locals say there.
Bite Size Languages is a great method for complete beginners to increase listening comprehension, improve pronunciation, and for fine-tuning the ears to the language. You'll also learn hundreds of words of useful vocabulary and phrases. I can't PROMISE it will take you from nothing to something in terms of levels, but you'll quickly benefit and learn a lot from using Bite Size Languages.
No. Bite Size Language Courses are made for beginners. Once you're into the intermediate levels these courses will probably be too easy for you.
But, are you really intermediate in all 5 of them?!
Oh, god no! I don't think my pronunciation would be quite good enough for that in all 5 languages! Instead, each lesson is recorded by a pair of native speakers (male and female). Maybe if I bring out a Bite Size Languages Danish next would you hear my voice on the recordings ;)
