The Power of Listening as a Beginner Language Learner

Dear Friends,

My name is Kris and I've been running the Actual Fluency Podcast and Blog since 2014, where I've interviewed over 150 accomplished multilinguals (polyglots) and industry professionals.

Today I'd like to talk to you about listening...

Listening is a highly underrated activity in language learning that anyone really ought to be doing more of.

But, how do you find suitable content to listen to as a beginner when all the native-level materials are way too difficult, and all the typical beginner resources are in English?

Or worse yet, they teach you language you're never going to use!

Like booking a hotel room over the phone, or 30 different species of animals...

This is where Bite Size Languages come in...

It's a new series of courses providing beginners or false beginners with effortless listening practice, that you can actually understand and follow along to.

With 100 lessons of short-and-easy dialogues, they are also easy to do, even if you're super busy or don't feel like it.

When you've listened to the dialogues a number of times, then you can dive into the lesson notes and do more conventional studying with transcripts, translations, vocabulary, and grammar sections.

Here's what you'll get from working on listening to comprehensible input as a beginner:

  • Improve your listening comprehension - Did you know it's also one of the biggest challenges of new learners? If you struggle to understand, or when words start and end then you need more listening practice.

  • Improve your pronunciation skills. This sounds crazy, but it's true. How are you supposed to pronounce a word correctly, if you can't tell the difference between the sounds of a language?

  • You learn the grammar in CONTEXT:  No need to memorise boring tables or rule sheets. Once you've listened to the dialogues you can dive into the grammar explanations and guide provided.

How each lesson of Bite Size Languages is structured

Here's what each lesson contains.

Lesson Audio

The lesson audio is clear, target language only, and features 2 native speakers (male and female). The audios are also available on their own in a special mobile app that offers hands-free listening on the go. The more you listen, the more you learn!

NOTE: You can find samples for the remaining 4 languages further down this page

Use the line-by-line transcript as a guide for when you're listening, so you can see the natural pauses and pronunciation in the language compared to how it's written. This also helps with learning the vocabulary.

Sample Transcript:

Arriver en retard.

Salut. Comment ça va ?

Tu es en retard.

S'il te plaît ne te mets pas en colère contre moi.

Est-ce que tu t'es perdu ?

Oui. Je me suis perdu.

Ça va maintenant ?

Oui, tout va bien.

Grammar Notes

In this section you'll learn some of the most important grammar points for the lesson. This is not mandatory studying, as you'll get a lot of the grammar through context just by listening.

Sample Grammar Notes:

"Il" is a neutral value and is more of an "it" than a "he." "S'il vous plaît" would be the formal form.

"Se perdre" is another exemple of the reflexive form of the verb with "se" (oneself): "je me perds," "tu te perds," "il se perd," etc.

French adjectives have different endings when describing people, depending on the gender. In this case, "perdu" is for a male, whereas for a female it would be "perdue."

There's a useful translation for you to check your comprehension. We've put this at the end of the lesson so you don't get distracted.

Sample Translation:

Showing up late

Hi. How are you?

You're late.

Please don't be mad at me.

Did you get lost?

Yes. I got lost.

Are you OK now?

Yes, everything is all right.

Literal Translation

You'll also find a direct translation, so you can understand the structure of the language a little bit easier.

Sample Literal Translation:

To-arrive in lateness.

Hi. How it goes?

You are in lateness.

If he to-you pleases not you put not in anger against me.

Is it that you yourself is lost?

Yes. I myself am lost.

It goes now?

Yes, everything goes well.

Cultural Notes

Language learning isn't always just about the language. In these 100 cultural sections you'll learn about common practices, etiquette, culture, and much more. Great way to impress native speakers with some additional knowledge tourists won't know!

Cultural Notes Example:

In some cultures, being late is wholly unacceptable, but in France, there's a more open-minded view on late arrivals.

This is especially true in the south of France, where being 15 to 20 minutes late isn't frowned upon.

When you do arrive, you'll be expected to be bringing a small gift, like a bouquet of flowers, a live plant, or chocolates.
